Custom Clubs – Stats of the month
Trevor Nelson, DJ and closet golf fanatic, visited Urban Golf's Custom Clubs Department as he felt his existing, off the rack set were failing him badly and preventing his game from improving.
The main issues facing Trevor were a lack of distance and feeling throughout his set, wayward tee shots from his driver and a lack of control with his wedges. Our in house equipment expert, Zane Navie, spent the morning observing Trevor hit some shots and analysing the data collated with our launch monitor and shaft mounted strain gauges. Zane's diagnosis was that Trevor was lacking distance with his irons due to their being too long and too light for him to be able to make a consistent, central contact with the ball. The inconsistency from the driver also stemmed from a similar cause. The shaft was not only too long and light but, at the tip, too soft meaning it was impossible for Trevor to achieve anything close to a consistent launch angle.
Zanes Remedy
• Zane built a set of Bridgestone Irons from Trevor and took 1/4 inch off the shaft length across the set. Zane also added weight to the club heads and MOI matched his irons increasing consistency and feel throughout. In spite of the shorter shaft length this increased control ensured Trevor consistently made a cleaner contact with the ball increasing ball speed significantly.
 • Zane replaced the driver with a Titleist 909D2 with a Roddio W-7WA shaft. This graphite shaft was heavier with a stiffer tip ensuring the consistency of launch angle improved greatly. As with the irons Zane reduced the shaft length, this time by 1 inch, but actually achieved an increased ball speed.
• For the wedges Zane analysed Trevor's angle of attack and, by using the correct grind on the sole, managed to increase the amount of spin being generated, greatly increasing Trevor's control with the ball.

6 Iron Stats             Before                            After
• Ball Speed:           105.1 mph                     117.6 mph
• Spin:                       4,783 rpm                      5,593 rpm
• Launch Angle:      20.9 degrees                 17.7 degrees
• Distance:              149.4 yds                        172.4 yds

Driver Stats            Before                            After
• Ball Speed:           125 mph                        132 mph
• Spin:                       3,261 rpm                      2,646 rpm
• Launch Angle:      15.2 degrees                13.2 degrees
• Distance:               230 yds                          250 yds

About this phenomenal transformation Trevor says… “I've now got confidence with every club in my bag and feel, for the first time, like I'm in control of my clubs”
