Newsletter - June 2009

Thu 04th June, 2009

Celebrating the launch of Taylor Made's new set of golf clubs, tips to improve your drives from our Academy, the launch of the Monday Night Roll Up and an overview of Urban Golf's very own Ollie Wilson during his time at the 2009 Masters in Augusta.

TIP OF THE MONTH: DRIVING AMBITONS
Long accurate tee shots represent a tremendous competitive advantage -creating chances to reach the green in fewer shots, increasing the likelihood of lower scores. Here’s helpful advice from Urban Golf Academy:
Powerful, accurate drives require you SET your body in a desirable CONDITION to make the most powerful and accurate swing motion. The better your ‘Set Condition’ the greater your chances of creating better conditions for impact with the golf ball as you swing towards the target. Routinely note –from the ground up:
Wider stance than for lower scale shots Favour positioning the ball off the inside of your front foot – note the way the driver shaft leans gently away from the target in keeping with its design; Left side tall, Right side curved, Weight evenly distributed; Spine in good condition – Abs drawn inwards, Shoulder Blades drawn towards one another; Chin clear of chest  Arms hanging from shoulders…
…you’re now Set, and in desirable condition to feel your upcoming swing motion.

May all your drives be long and finish on target!

Oliver Wilson - European Ryder Cup Player
It was great to be back in Augusta, I had a good time there and it's always a lot of fun to play in front of my old team mates and friends again. It's unfortunate that it didn't go according to plan and I'm really disappointed with the result. I felt like I played ok but I just didn't putt very well all week. I had a few bad breaks and bad lies in bunkers that ruined my chances. On a positive note though I definitely left feeling confident about going back next year, I was surprised how the course played, and feel like its actually a course that I could win round and possibly one that out of all the majors suits my game the most.
There were a few special moments at my first Masters that I want to share with you. One was the Par 3 which has to be one of the coolest events in all of golf. I had Rob caddying for me, squeezed into the trademark white jumpsuit. I had an average 1 under par score but hitting the pin on the 9th was a lot of fun to hear the crowd... I think it was the loudest cheer I had in my favour all week! The other was on the practice short game area. Whilst hitting bunker shots, Gary Player (playing his last Masters) stopped and watched me and then came up and started to ask me about how I played bunker shots and complimented me on my technique! Coming from someone who is regarded as the best bunker player of all time, was one of the best moments of my career so far.

Urban Golf’s Monday Night Roll-Up enters its 2009 season, following a smash hit inaugural year.
The MNR-U is the best antidote for golfers starved of a weekly fix of competitive golf, with plenty of playful banter; weekly prizes; challenging championship courses; and a season-long Order of Merit (OOM). Plus, 4 ‘Majors’ per season, promising double-points. The prospect is compelling for anyone who enjoys playing ‘when it matters’.
Last season’s finale saw a Ryder Cup-style match, pitting teams of Eight (earning qualification via the Roll-Up Order of Merit) from UG Soho and Smithfield, in a grudge match of epic proportions.

Post-event celebrations saw individual O.O.M champion, David Andrews from UG Smithfield, presented with the title, AND a luxury golfing holiday in France!
The weekly newsletter highlights, shenanigans and results.

The flexible schedule mirrors the professional tours. Competitors select their appearances throughout the season, though most attend weekly to avoid falling off the pace.
Of course, weather or bad light won’t stop play!
